Shakespeare's work has qualities that are superior to those found in many modern books. More importantly, Shakespeare is very well-known.

2) In your opinion, could any literature course be considered complete if Shakespeare’s works were not included in the syllabus?

Yes, it could, because Shakespeare is no the only writer in history. As in the first question, there are thousands of great writers in the history of English literature.

3) Is it possible to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and genius without knowledge about his background?

Yes. To know his background would not have a overly large influence of one's enjoyment of his work.
1) There are thousands of great writers in the history of English literature. Why Shakespeare (instead of any other writer)?

Why not Shakespeare? I feel that Shakespeare was considered "great" as he managed to produce a huge amount of high quality works that managed to leave a lasting impact on the reader. Everyone knows Usain Bolt, but the fame will fade off if he runs 10s, 11s for every race he competes in, then rises once or twice to the great heights. However, if he regularly breaks the 9s barrier, even without the world record, he will still be very well-known, maybe not here, but in other places.Similarly, Shakespeare was the epitome of the Bolt that ran consistently under 9s. With his huge volume of high quality works, people who read about him would remember him, but might not have said that he was "great". However, the immense volume of his works cascaded onto their memory, burning him into their brains by sheer repetition. From then on, he was on a path to greatness.

2) In your opinion, could any literature course be considered complete if Shakespeare’s works were not included in the syllabus?

Due to the fact that Shakespeare's works had great influence on literature, it is neccesary for us to study Shakespeares works to cope with the normal literature syllabus today, which requires us to point out the parralells between different works to score a better grade.

3) Is it possible to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and genius without knowledge about his background?

To appreciate Shakespeare's works, knowledge of background might not have been required. The knowledge of the surrounding factors influencing the work might give one a deeper understanding, but the knowledge of the author's background is not as important. However, the genius of Shakespeare can only be appreciated if the knowledge of his background is known as without knowledge of his background, there is no man to see, no genius to examine
1) There are thousands of great writers in the history of English literature.
Shakespeare has written many plays which has contributed to the development of modern English and literature, especially when it was the Elizabethan era, when it was the height of the English Renaissance. His prominence at that time when English was starting to evolve has led him to his rise. He was successful as many of his works are still being studied today.

2) In your opinion, could any literature course be considered complete if Shakespeare’s works were not included in the syllabus?

I think it would not be considered complete as his works were written at a time when the English language was evolving and the English language was different from other periods of the time. Hence, I think it would be important to study a different English of a different time.

3) Is it possible to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and genius without knowledge about his background?

I think it is partially possible, when we are simply appreciating without analysing it in detail. When we need to analyse it in detail, it is not really possible to appreciate his works without knowledge about his background. Without his background, we would not know where his thoughts and ideas came from. We also would not know why he used some words as during the Elizabethan era, the meaning of some words might be different from today's meaning.
1) There are thousands of great writers in the history of English literature. Why Shakespeare (instead of any other writer)?

William Shakespeare has great influence over the history of English Literature. He is a renowned playwright who transformed English theatre by expanding expectations about what could be accomplished through the richness of his literary devices; the compelling drama of his plots; the penetrating nature of his characterizations; the universal interest and appeal in his dialogs and monologues; his sense of humor; his wisdom and wit; and his many famous, unforgettable lines. Shakespeare has also coined many words and phrases and widened the range of then limited vocabulary during the Elizabethan era. He is largely involved in the renaissance happening in England. It is notable how Shakespeare's writings have also influenced a large number of great novelists and poets over the years, including Herman Melville and Charles Dickens. Even until today, many of his quotations and neologisms have been passed into everyday usage in English and other languages.

2) In your opinion, could any literature course be considered complete if Shakespeare’s works were not included in the syllabus?

I would say it is not complete. There is rare quality to the works of Shakespeare. He is also widely regarded as the greatest writer in all of English literature. Although Shakespeare composed a wealth of exquisite, enduring poetry (especially the Sonnets), he spent most of his time in theatre. His genius is evident both in the breadth and the depth of some three dozen plays, a key aspect of Liteature, many of which are counted among the greatest works in English literature. He continues to be the most-quoted author in the English language. For instance, there is the infamous line, “All the world’s a stage”?

Shakespeare is outstanding in bringing out the human character. Many of his characters have become immortal in the sense that they capture types which are universal. We, as students today, continue to identify their struggles. There is much to gain from comparing and contrasting Shakespeare's characters with each other, and from learning the reasons of their strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it is essential to study the effective and entertaining literary mediums that Shakespeare conveyed these insights in.

3) Is it possible to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and genius without knowledge about his background?

Shakespeare's works reflect greatly on the society he was in at that time. Some of the ideas of his works derive from the existing problems and struggles of different people he had observed in his daily life. Furthermore, since Shakespeare has a large involvement in the Renaissance ongoing at that time, it calls for a greater need to study the background and society that is revolving around Shakespeare. Only then can we truly appreciate the art of Shakespeare's work and genius in depth.
1) There are thousands of great writers in the history of English literature.

2) In your opinion, could any literature course be considered complete if Shakespeare’s works were not included in the syllabus?

It would not be complete as I feel that Shakespeare was the best playwright in the Renaissance (Sorry Russell I haven't read Christopher Marlowe).

3) Is it possible to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and genius without knowledge about his background?

It would be possible to appreciate his work, but without knowledge of him, you would probably never understand his work. For example, in Secondary One, when Miss Huang quoted a line in The Merchant of Venice ( In sooth I know not why I am so sad), I found the line brilliant, but I did not know what it really meant and what the context was.

Shakespeare wrote many plays and sonnets, and he conjured up many new words, some by joining two similar words together. He is one of the most famous writers in history and most of today’s films and stories have something in relation to Shakespeare’s plays or are based on his plays.

2) In your opinion, could any literature course be considered complete if Shakespeare’s works were not included in the syllabus?

Yes, I would say they can be complete. Although the structure of the sentences are different, most of the other stories and plays contain some elements of Shakespeare’s plays and by studying these stories, students can still learn and relate to certain Shakespeare’s plays. For example, many romantic stories or films have storylines similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. Hence, Shakespeare’s works need not be in a literature course for it to be complete, as the study of literature itself can have relations to Shakespeare’s plays. However, looking through Shakespeare’s plays can help students learn better in literature as quite a bit of it came from Shakespeare.

3) Is it possible to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and genius without knowledge about his background?

Yes, it is harder but possible, since his plays do not necessarily have to do with his life. However, learning more about his background can help students to understand why his language is quite different from what we use today. This way, students can appreciate the unique language structure and vocabulary being used.
1) There are thousands of great writers in the history of English literature.
